Using the Diff in the "portable" mode

Top  Previous  Next

Many of AdeptSQL Diff users are DBAs or developers who need to use the Diff on their customers' machines.  For them, it is important to have a "portable" Diff that can be run on any computer without installing and activating it every time.

To do so, the Diff provides a way to bind the activation key to a USB flash drive. To obtain such a key, plug in a USB drive, run the Diff and press "Choose serial" on the registration dialog. You'll see a list of all unique IDs ("serial numbers") the Diff knows how to generate on your machine. Choose from that list the serial corresponding to your flash drive and send us a key request (obviously, prior to requesting any keys you have to buy a license). The Diff is not guaranteed to see any existing model of USB drive, but with most of them it will work fine.

In fact you can put the Diff itself on the same flash drive and run it on any machine *without installation*.  To do so, just copy Diff's home directory to some directory on the removable drive (and optionally make a shortcut).  The Diff is designed to recognize the situation when there is no Registry entries for it, then it runs in the "portable mode", loading/saving any options into ASQLDIFF.INI file instead. See also Running from command line for details of how you can control saving and loading of the Diff configuration.
